Chitin from dried shrimp shells & head

Chitin is a raw material for chitosan and glucosamine hydrochloride and it is obtained from Dry shrimp shells.

Chitin is a base structural polymer found on most everything – crustacean exoskeletons, cells, bacterian insects and anything that has a covering. Chitin is translucent, pliable, resilient, and quite tough.

In terms of abundance, chitin is second to only cellulose. It is an extremely versatile, biodegradable molecule.

Chitin is a biodegradable molecule that dissolves over time, it is used in a number of industrial applications, such as surgical thread and binders for dyes and glues.
Decalcification of shell fish waste using dilute aqueous HCL and demineralization using dilute aqueous NaOH will result into chitin.

Uses of Chitin:

  • Chitin is a good inducer of plant defense mechanisms for controlling diseases..
  • It has also been assessed as a fertilizer that can improve overall crop yields.
  • Chitin in food processing includes the formation of edible films and as an additive to thicken and stabilize foods.
  • Chitin is a raw material for chitosan and glucosamine hydrochloride.
  • Chitin is dried and then sold to glucosamine manufacturers. Glucosamine is new pharmaceutical product for arthritis.
  • Most importantly, Chitin can be used as an absorbent during extraction of Uranium from the sea. Please note that the amount of uranium in sea is 500 times more than that on land, All the future power plants will run on uranium. This application has a promising future as the cost of extraction of uranium on land is much more costly than sea.
